Custom Interactive Pop-Up Picture Book with Flip, Wheel & Shutter Mechanisms

A premium custom pop-up book featuring flip, wheel, and shutter mechanisms. Each page combines motion and storytelling through precise paper engineering and high-quality offset printing.


Project Overview

This project features a high-end custom pop-up picture book that integrates multiple interactive paper mechanisms — including flaps, rotating wheels, sliding shutters, and multi-layer pop-up structures.

The goal was to combine mechanical motion with artistic storytelling, creating a vivid and immersive reading experience.

The client, a creative design studio, wanted to visualize the theme of “Spaces and People” through dimensional storytelling. By using interactive paper engineering, each page presents a dynamic scene that changes with every movement.

Design & Technical Challenges

  • Innovative Paper Engineering Each page features unique mechanical structures — from flip panels and rotating discs to sliding shutters and layered pop-ups. All components must open and close precisely, with a tolerance margin of only ±0.5mm to ensure smooth motion and visual accuracy.
  • Precision Printing Control Printed using a Heidelberg 4-color offset press for high-accuracy color reproduction. Inner pages used 250gsm matte art paper for stiffness and stability during folding. The cover used 300gsm textured specialty paper with spot UV coating and embossed finishing, giving it a refined, tactile surface.
  • Manual Assembly & Quality Control Each book contains over 20 mechanical components, all hand-assembled by experienced technicians. Every folding line and die-cut section was tested repeatedly to ensure precise alignment, achieving a final defect rate below 1%.

Production Process

  1. Structural Engineering & Prototype – CAD layout, manual mock-up, and motion testing (≈7 days)
  2. Printing & Post-Press Finishing – 4C offset printing, die-cutting, creasing, UV coating, and assembly (≈10 days)
  3. Inspection & Packaging – 100% QC inspection and individual protective box packaging (≈3 days) ➡ Total Production Time: 20 days

Outcome

The finished book measures 320mm × 320mm when fully opened, presenting a stunning transformation on every page as readers turn and interact with the structures.

It was later used as an art exhibition piece and portfolio sample by the client, showcasing our strength in complex structural design, precision color control, 3D assembly, and high-end handmade book production.
